Meat pies are an ubiquitous Australian comfort food. These meat pies generally contain minced meat, onions, mushrooms, and cheese. You can buy them in cafes for dine-in or take-away at roadside stalls. So iconic, every Australia Day there is a meat pie eating contest.

Ingredients
- 1 finely chopped onion
- 500 gr ground beef
- 1 cup water
- 2 cubes beef stock
- 1/4 cup tomato sauce
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 pinch of salt and pepper *to taste
- 3 tbsp wheat flour
- 1 sheet of shortcrust pastry
- 1 sheet of pastries
- 1 egg for glaze
Method
- Cook the meat and onions until the meat is brown.
- Add the cups of water, stock, sauce and seasonings.
- Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Mix flour and remaining water, add meat, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Cold.
- Cover the pie plate with the shortcrust cake.
- Spoon into the cooled meat mixture. Wet the edges of the pastry with water.
- Sprinkle with puff pastry, press down to seal the edges, trim and brush with egg.
- Bake at 230C for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 190C and bake for another 25 minutes until golden.
