Tom Yum Goong Recipe

There are two types of tom yum goong, namely tom yum goong nam sai which has a clear soup and tom yum goong nam khon which has a cloudy soup with a mixture of milk. However, the type of tom yum goong which is more popular in Indonesia is the first type.

How to make delicious tom yum goong? Here is a tom yum goong nam sai recipe that you can practice at home.

Ingredients (5 servings):

  • 250 grams snapper fillet
  • 100 grams button mushrooms, split
  • 100 grams of squid, cut into rings
  • 15 pieces of fish balls/shrimp meatballs
  • 15 medium size prawns, remove the skin and head for the stock
  • 8-10 pieces of cayenne pepper, leave whole
  • 5 lime leaves
  • 5 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 3 tablespoons of cooking oil
  • 2 carrots, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 lemongrass stalk, bruised

Shrimp Broth:

  • 1.5 liters of water
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil

Complementary:

  • 1 lime
  • 3 coriander leaves, coarsely chopped
  • 1 scallion, finely sliced
  • Tom Yum Pasta:
  • 10 red onions
  • 8 cloves of garlic
  • 5-8 red chilies
  • 5 cm galangal
  • 3 lime leaves
  • 2 tablespoons ebi, brewed with hot water
  • 2 teaspoons oyster sauce
  • 2 lemongrass stalks, take the white part only
  • 2 tablespoons of tamarind
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

How to Make Tom Yum Goong:

  1. Wash the skin and head of the prawns. Then saute with cooking oil and garlic. After that pour 1.5 liters of water and boil until boiling. Strain the broth and set aside.
  2. Puree the ingredients of the tom yum paste, then stir-fry with cooking oil. Add lime leaves, lemon grass, and cayenne pepper. Stir until fragrant.
  3. Reheat the prawn broth, then add the stir-fried tom yum paste seasoning into it.
  4. Add carrots and button mushrooms.
  5. Season the soup with fish sauce, salt and sugar.
  6. Cook until the gravy boils and all ingredients are cooked.
  7. Finally, add the peeled prawns and squid. Cook for 2 minutes, then remove from the stove.
  8. Serve the tom yum goong in a bowl. I steal the lime juice, then sprinkle with scallions and coriander leaves.
